Editors : What program do you use to write the code? The first issue to tackle is which software to use. |

First of all, you don't need anything fancy to make a web page. Any text editor including NotePad (under accessories on your computer) will work. To see some HTML just right click on this page and view source. You will see the html portion. If you copy this, paste it into a NotePad file. Save. Change the file extension from .txt to .html (or .htm) Double click to open it and it will run as a web page in your default browser. The thing is, it won't look the same. That's because you don't see the CSS and PHP code. You do not want a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor. It sounds nice, but you have no design control and it is impossible to edit. You will just be entering text. You want a code editor that supports as many scripting languages as possible. Even though Dreamweaver is perfect, it is not cheap. If you don't have a firm grasp of the code then you will be blindly generating pages that you don't really understand and you can not quickly edit. It is better to use a text editor like RapidPHP while you are learning so you will understand what it is that you are doing. Once you have mastered the code then you can use Dreamweaver to cut your development time. This is a fundamental issue but seems to be largely ignored in all introduction materials. Maybe you are just supposed to know this. It depends on your usage, background and budget. |

There are other editors out there that try to sound like cheaper versions of Dreamweaver but they do not even come close to measuring up. You will end up wasting time and money that you could have spent on the real thing. The fact is, there is nothing out there anything like Dreamweaver. There are some blogging software packages like WordPad that are free but they have specifc purposes and add-ons are not free.
Expensive Editors: Dreamweaver CS4 $399Eventually you will need the best and this is the state of the art program for web development. It is still best to start with the text editors first so you really know what you are doing before using this product. But this will cut your development time dramatically!!! Do not try to save money by getting an illegal copy that claims to be legitimate. This program is well worth the money you will spend. There are countless add-ons to this software which make it infinitely more valuable. Legitimate student/teacher discounts bring the cost down. You can buy directly from Adobe to be sure to get the legitimate and latest versions because the software never goes on sale and it is the smae price evrywhere unless it is an outdated or illegitimate copy.There is an extrordinarily large number of software titles available that coordinate with Dreamweaver like PhotoShop, Flash and coutless others from Adobe as well as add-ons from WebAssist that can make your cost mushroom dramtically. Be careful not to spend money until you are certain that you can make use of the software. Once you go pro you can start adding some of these valuable but very expensive titles.
