Rochester Web Wizard: Free web design training service and resources by the @ Data Info Magic

Free online web design training guide, lessons and resources by the Rochester Web Wizard:

Whether you want to learn all aspects of web design or just need to be familiar with the terms and see the whole picture in order to make informed decisions. Your one stop guide for all of your free web design training, lessons and resources. If you have more time than money. This is the place for you.

Free does NOT mean you need to purchase something else to recieve the free item!

Everything I use is "Open Source" meaning it's free and can be edited for your own use. At some point, I will zip everything into a PDF format that you can download.

You will be required to log in to access the Database Application. This is the database application written from scratch and all hand coded and can be written using completely free software. Take a look at the Database Application to see how things work. You must also log in to view the DataBase Application.

Disclaimer: Since this is all about free, this is just informational and not being reccommended.

I have created the same database application using DreamWeaver ($399) and DataAssist ($199). It is much more expensive to do but it cuts the devlopment time by 90% by automatically creating all of the code through a wizard. I would not reccommend it to anyone who is not very knowlegable about HTML, CSS, PHP and MySQL code first. There is a lot of code that you may need to look at and edit to customize the application. It is also not worth it unless you will be using the datafiles commercially.

You must also log in to view the WebAssist Application.

Welcome to the most valuable site on the web!

The dual purpose of the website is to show potential web developers how to self educate for free but also for anyone to just become familiar with the terms so they can make informed decisions. I find that these two issues are not being met in a single place on the Internet without a cost of some sort attached. The nice part is that you can pick & choose topics and just learn the aspects that interest you, while getting a global view of how everything fits together. And, I don't know everything, that's why my advice is free. Your choice is always, learn it yourself and use free open source software OR pay someone else to do the same thing for you. You may decide to do some yourself and outsource other parts.

I do not intend to replace other training materials.

Think of this as more as a guide to keep you on track while you are learning. It is intended to take away the "what do I do next and where do I go from here" moment, which happens all too frequently. This is intended as strictly a free service to the community.

I have spent the past two winters learning all there is to learn about the world wide web.

That is the great part about being retired and getting paid not to work. After 33 years of teaching math and computer science, I am embarking on a second career in web and database design and, because I still enjoy teaching, I would like to help other people accomplish the same thing.

The advantage to you is that, unlike 99% of sites on the web, I am not trying to steal your money or cheat you with some kind of scam.

All opinions are mine alone from my own experience. Everything will be explained in plain English and the acronyms will be explained as simply as possible. I will furnish code whenever possible to be copied and used freely. If you do use anything I would appreciate, but not require, a link back to my site. The nice thing about this process is that you can stop at any point when you know what you need to know. Enjoy the ride.

All resources are only suggestions.

I have no monetary interest in anything you decide to purchase through any links from this site. My recommendations are based on my experience and are intended to save you both time and money! In some instances I had to search through hundreds of websites using many hours to sift through for each one for valuable and trust worthy site that I found. All links have been tested for safety and integrity and I have personally used their service.

I make no profit on anything on this part of the site.

I recieve a very small commission from the affiliates below, but it does not affect your cost, except in a possible discount by clicking through this site. All information is completely free with no strings attached. Some suggested resources do cost money, but most are either free or very inexpensive. I will include links where they can be purchased, but feel free to shop around for better prices. I would suggest not spending much until you get far enough to know whether this is indeed somthing that you are interested in pursuing.

It's probably good to know that when I started I had a background in teaching.

I taught the A.P. Computer Science course so I had experience going back 30 years including FORTRAN, BASIC, LOGO, Pascal, Visual Basic, C++ and Java, although I wouldn't call myself an expert at any of them. I had also learned some HTML which was included in Java Applets. You really just need to be a logical person and have a strong desire to know how things work. I hadn't originally planned to get into a business. This started as a hobby and just naturally evolved that way.

Here are some of the topics that I can now offer you:

Linux Hosting: PDF, Flash, AJAX, XHTML, PHP, CSS, MySQL, JavaScript, Java Applets, Apache Server and

Windows Hosting: is no longer offered, but I have experience with Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2008 including: ASPX, Visual Basic.net, Microsoft Access, TSQL & Windows databases, and SQL Server as well as C++ and Java code.

I will assume that you will use HostMonster as your host, XAMPP as your local server and RodenWebEditor as your first editor. However, you may choose any host you like and the steps will be the same. You may use the topical approach below or follow a sequential approach supplimented by the topics, starting with Lesson 1. Other lessons will follow. The Lessons are coordinated with and supplemented by the Topics.

Sequential Approach (Lessons 1-7 are complete and available now.)

Lesson 1 Setting up your first website.
Lesson 2 Installing your local server with PHP and MySQL
Lesson 3 Adding a Web Editor, Host and FTP
Lesson 4 Getting Started Writing PHP Scripts
Lesson 5 Getting Started Writing MySQL Queries
Lesson 6 Combining PHP and MySQL
Lesson 7 Putting it All Together: HTML,CSS, PHP &MySQL application.

I use the "immersion method" which means diving in head first. You start with the big picture and then add in the details. That means rapid progress and more immediate tangible results, as opposed to the "wade in slowly" method which starts with the details and takes far more time to develop and delays seeing the big picture. Each lesson is designed to take 1 to 4 weeks to complete and to become competent.

Can't wait for the Lessons? Dive right in to the topics!

Topical Approach

1. Hosting: How and where to put your site. Start for free. Work your way up.
2. HTML and CSS: How to write the code. Templates. What do they mean?
3. Editors: How to edit your pages and pictures. From free to very expensive.
4. FTP: How to upload your site.
5. Data Bases and Server-side Scripts: What are PHP and JavaScript. MySQL and TSQL. What do I choose and why. This section includes samples and MySQL/PHP code.
6. Extras:Photos, Flash, PDF, Bulletin Boards, RSS Feeds and more..
Please check back often for updates.
